"No Apostle has the right on his own authority to institute a sacrament, that is, to give a divine promise with a sign attached; for this belongs to Christ alone."
Babylonian Captivity was written in 1520 as a point-by-point refutation of the prevailing practices of the Roman Catholic Church. In this treatise, Luther's trademark style is present. This treatise provides the reader an historical window into at the renaissance world, and the stark doctrinal fissures between the reformer's "at large" and the Roman Catholic Church.

The Babylonian Captivity of the Church edition by Martin Luther Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
I initially downloaded this book on my for sake of ease but it did little to impress me. There was nothing wrong with the electronic quality of the product. There are just some works whose impact can't be fully felt in an electronic format. I put aside the edition and purchased Three Treatises (which includes The Babylonian Captivity of the Church) and was much more pleased. Reading Martin Luther's words in print somehow drew me closer to the Reformation in a way a could not.
Covered the topic well.
Classic version of Luther's key thesis during the time when the Roman Catholic was seeking to replace the mediatorial of Christ.
Martin Luther had earlier influences that I was not aware. This book helped me to see the larger picture including the pre-reformation.
